More winter weather is on the way, with snow possible early next week.

The National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington office issued winter weather advisories for the Baltimore and Central Maryland regions for a wintry mix of precipitation in the forecast tonight into Thursday morning.

NWS forecasts rain, snow and sleet for this evening and freezing rain overnight and into tomorrow morning. The region is expected to see less than a tenth of an inch to two-tenths of an inch of freezing rain as well a light coating — less than an inch — of snow and sleet, according to Jeremy Geiger, a meteorologist for NWS Baltimore/Washington. Though modest, Geiger warns ice and snow can have similar impacts, such as dangerous road conditions.

“A lot of ice can build up on trees and power lines. You can also have a lot of black ice and slick ice on the roads,” Geiger explained. He recommends giving yourself more time to travel and taking care of sidewalks so you don’t slip.

The Maryland Transportation Authority said on social media that crews were monitoring and treating roadways. If able, MDTA recommended altering or canceling travel plans on Wednesday night.

Geiger said showers are expected to begin around 10 p.m. in the region. On Thursday, freezing rain will likely fall between 1 and 7 a.m. As it warms up, it’ll transition to rain between 8 and 10 a.m., according to Geiger.

NWS Baltimore/Washington is also monitoring a mix of wintry precipitation for Saturday, where forecasts indicate a 90% chance of rain with a low of around 35 degrees and a high of 40 degrees. NWS is also monitoring potential snow for Monday and Tuesday.

“There could be adjustments in how a system moves. Maybe there’ll be less precipitation or more,” Geiger said. “Right now, it seems like it could be predominantly snow.”
