An off-duty Anne Arundel County Police officer was involved in a late December hit-and-run incident that resulted in damage to another car, police alleged in a Monday news release.

Cpl. Russell Ruehl, a five-year veteran of the force who is assigned to the Anne Arundel County Police Department’s Bureau of Community Services, was suspended without pay and charged Monday with “multiple traffic citations.”

Marc Limansky, a spokesman for the Anne Arundel County Police Department, said the incident happened shortly before 10 p.m. on Dec. 28 when Ruehl, traveling southbound on Ritchie Highway at the East West Boulevard intersection, hit another driver in a privately owned vehicle.

The other car suffered “minor” damage, Limansky said, and there were no injuries.

The officer left the scene, Limansky said, and an investigation by the department’s Office of Professional Standards found Ruehl was the driver that hit the privately owned vehicle. There have been no impairment-related charges.

He will be subject to an internal investigation to review potential agency policy violations, Limansky said.

Ruehl could not immediately be reached for comment. Limansky said a court date has not yet been scheduled.
