A woman was arrested Wednesday and charged with causing life-threatening injuries in a 23-car crash in January on the Bay Bridge in Queen Anne’s County.
The Maryland Transportation Authority said in a statement that 48-year-old Gwendolyn Persina of Chester was speeding in a 2018 Honda Civic when she struck another vehicle just before 8 a.m., causing the chain-reaction crash Jan. 27.
Persina did not have a lawyer listed in online court records as of Thursday afternoon.
MDTA police issued an arrest warrant Tuesday for Persina. She faces multiple charges, including causing a life-threatening injury while under the influence of alcohol, driving while impaired by alcohol, driving with a suspended license and reckless driving.
One person was transported to the local hospital with life-threatening injuries, while 11 additional people were taken to local hospitals.
Persina is being held without bail and has a motion hearing Monday, Nov. 4.
Persina has a prior conviction for driving while impaired. She was sentenced in 2022 to 18 months of supervised release in Queen Anne’s County.
