The Mall in Columbia will operate with normal hours Sunday after a teenager was fatally shot at the shopping center during an altercation the night before.
Howard County Police identified the victim Sunday as Angelo Little, 17, of Columbia. Police received a call at 6:10 p.m. Saturday for gunfire in the mall’s food court. When officers arrived, they found a deceased male. Detectives believe the shooting was targeted.
Police said the investigation is ongoing, but they believe only one shooter was involved and just one shot fired. Police determined Saturday the shooter had left the property.
A spokesperson for the mall confirmed it will operate normally from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.
Mall officials did not yet know if there would be security changes.
“We are extremely upset that these individuals chose our center for a targeted act of violence,” the spokesperson wrote in an email. “We pride ourselves on being a safe haven for the community to shop, dine and be entertained. Our center maintains a comprehensive and robust security program [that] is constantly being evaluated to meet the needs of our shoppers.”
An employee at the mall who requested his name and the name of his store not be mentioned out of concerns over his job said he has been working at the store about six months and has not seen a situation like this before.
“People started rushing, kind of like a stampede,” the employee said. He heard yelling and stores being locked down, with patrons and employees hiding in the backs of stores.
Police evacuated the mall after the shooting. Police said no additional information was available. Police are offering a reward of up to $5,000 for tips that lead to an arrest. Anyone with information can remain anonymous and should contact police at 410-313-STOP or HCPDcrimetips@howardcountymd.gov.
