Police are investigating a fatal shooting after a 17-year-old was found dead in a vehicle parked in a residential neighborhood in Columbia on Tuesday.

Around 8:30 p.m., Howard County Police responded to the 6000 block of Helen Dorsey Way for a “suspicious circumstances call.” They found Lance Carrington, of Columbia, sitting in the driver’s seat with at least one gunshot wound, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

It’s not clear when the shooting happened, police said, and detectives believe the shooting was not random.

The neighborhood in East Columbia where the teen was found is largely residential, and less than a mile away from a handful of local schools. It’s also close to the expansive Blandair Regional Park.

This is the first homicide in Howard County in 2025. Police are offering a reward of up for $5,000 for information related to the shooting. People can contact police at 410-313-STOP or HCPDCrimeTips@howardcountymd.gov.
