A 51-year-old woman was charged and arrested after her 9-year-old granddaughter accidentally shot herself, the Baltimore City Police Department said.

Alethea Mitchell is facing multiple firearm charges, including firearm possession with a felony conviction, possession of a stolen firearm and allowing firearm access by a minor, according to online court records.

Mitchell is being held without bail and had no attorney listed in online court records. Her granddaughter, who suffered a self-inflicted and accidental gunshot wound, remains hospitalized and in critical condition, police said.

According to court documents, Mitchell left for work around 7:45 am. on Jan. 25, while her granddaughter was still asleep. The girl woke up around 10:30 a.m. and, just before 1 p.m., Mitchell texted her to see if she was OK and asked whether she was hungry.

The child did not respond to the text message and Mitchell came home with lunch shortly after 3 p.m., court documents said. That’s when she found her granddaughter in an upstairs bedroom lying in blood with a gun underneath her, according to court documents.

Officers responded to the shooting, which happened in the 3500 block of Ingleside Avenue in northwest Baltimore, shortly after 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Court documents said Mitchell called 911 when she found her granddaughter, then called her son to come over the house. Then Mitchell placed the weapon, a 9 mm handgun, into a clear tote in a back bedroom underneath folded clothes, according to the documents.

Mitchell told police the gun belonged to an ex-boyfriend, according to court documents. Police said they investigated and found the gun was stolen in a burglary and that Mitchell was not permitted to have a gun due to past offenses in Baltimore City.

“An innocent child is fighting for their life because this individual illegally and irresponsibly possessed a gun,” Mayor Brandon Scott said in a statement. “They not only shouldn’t have had a gun in the first place, but couldn’t be bothered to keep their own family safe.”
