The Mangione family is “shocked” by the arrest of Luigi Mangione, according to a statement shared on social media late Monday night.
In a statement, the family said it could not comment on “news reports regarding Luigi Mangione,” a Maryland native, who was arrested on gun charges in Pennsylvania on Monday morning and is a person of interest in the shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
“We only know what we have read in the media. Our family is shocked and devastated by Luigi’s arrest. We offer our prayers to the family of Brian Thompson and we ask people to pray for all involved,” the family wrote in a statement. “We are devastated by this news.”
The statement was issued by one of Luigi Mangione’s cousins, Nino Mangione, who has served in the Maryland House of Delegates since 2019.
The Mangione family is well-known in the Baltimore region. The patriarch of the Italian American family was Nick Mangione Sr., a self-made multimillionaire real estate developer who owned country clubs, nursing homes and radio stations.
He and his wife Mary had 10 children and 37 grandchildren.
