The San Francisco Police Department shared a tip with the FBI identifying Luigi Mangione as a possible suspect in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, according to the FBI’s New York office.

The tip was among many shared with the agency from the public and law enforcement and passed along to New York Police investigating the Dec. 4 murder. Last month, Mangione’s mother filed a missing persons report in San Francisco, saying she hadn’t spoken to him since July.

Mangione was arrested Monday after a five-day manhunt that ended when he was recognized by an employee at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania.

Mangione, the scion of a large and prominent Baltimore family, faces second-degree murder charges in New York and has retained attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo, a veteran of the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. In Pennsylvania, Mangione was charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm, forgery and providing false identification to police. He is being represented by Thomas Dickey.

Dickey’s office was overwhelmed by offers to pay Mangione’s legal bills, but he said it was unlikely he’d accept them.

“I just don’t feel comfortable about that,” Dickey said this week, adding that his client obviously appreciates any support he’s gotten.

Many details about Mangione have emerged after his alleged involvement with the Dec. 4 murder. A scouring of his social media also introduced a narrative. Mangione’s X profile had a photo of an X-ray of a spine with four large screws, and he discussed undergoing back surgery in July 2023 with a friend and in social media posts.

Mangione remains in a Pennsylvania state prison as he fights his extradition to New York.
