The fire watch at Camp Small ended Monday night, days after a massive blaze in Baltimore’s Woodberry neighborhood.

Fire watch operations at Camp Small concluded at 9 p.m. Monday, the Baltimore City Fire Department said in a post on social media on Tuesday.

“We’re confident at this point there won’t be flare-ups” at the site, department spokesperson John Marsh said.

Camp Small is Baltimore’s nationally recognized street tree recycling program, where felled trees are transformed into mulch, firewood and lumber.

There will likely still be visible smoke and some smoldering in the gigantic piles of logs at Camp Small, Marsh said, just because there’s so much wood there. But, he said, the rain in the forecast will help keep things under control. The National Weather Service says there’s a 100% chance of precipitation in Baltimore Wednesday.

Marsh said the department is focused on investigating the cause and origin of the fire now.

Last week’s fire tore through Camp Small Thursday night and shut down nearby Interstate 83 for hours. No injuries were reported, and though strike crews battled spot fires in nearby neighborhoods, Marsh said none of those blazes were significant. The fire was considered “contained” by Saturday.

On Saturday, Mayor Brandon Scott said he’s hopeful the city will be able to reopen Camp Small.

“It’s an important service to the city, and we have to make sure we keep that operation going,” he said.
