The Maryland Office of the State Fire Marshal is investigating a fire and explosion that happened Wednesday afternoon at a cannabis extraction facility in Stevensville, on Kent Island.
Two employees were injured, with one employee described as having severe but not life-threatening injuries, the fire marshal said.
Fire officials said an explosion happened in an “extraction booth” where propane and butane are used, though the cause of the explosion is still being investigated.
The incident happened at PharmaCann, a cannabis company that grows, processes and sells the product. PharmaCann could not immediately be reached for comment.

Investigators said “emergency response systems, including alarms and ventilation, functioned as designed, minimizing damage and injuries.”
The Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department and other surrounding volunteer departments were called to the site in Queen Anne’s County around 2 p.m. Wednesday after reports of an explosion, the fire marshal said.
Sprinkler systems “contained” the damage and hazmat teams from Anne Arundel County and Dorchester County were called in to investigate.
The Office of the State Fire Marshal estimated damage from the explosion to exceed $250,000 in value.
