A man who walked into the East Baltimore district courthouse and shot himself on Friday morning has died, according to the Maryland Office of Attorney General.

Garry Wright, 35, who was transported to the hospital in critical condition, was pronounced dead on Saturday, officials said.

Gary Brown, a bailiff who’s worked for the Baltimore City Eastside District Court for one year, also fired his weapon at Wright, but it wasn’t immediately clear who fired first.

Wright walked into the courthouse on Friday morning and began yelling. He was not yelling at anyone in particular, said Andy Alperstein, an attorney who was in the lobby, but it was disruptive.

Then, someone in the lobby yelled “Gun!”

“We all took cover,” he said. “We heard two shots right next to one another.”

According to witness accounts, the shooting took place in front of the security station — equipped with metal detectors — at the courthouse.

The Maryland Attorney General’s Office is investigating the shooting, as required under state law.

No one else was reported to be injured.
