Over 2.3 million Marylanders are expected to travel during the holiday season, with many heading out this weekend, according to AAA Mid-Atlantic.
Most of those Maryland travelers will be hitting the road, as AAA Mid-Atlantic expects the most congested days to be Dec. 21, Dec. 28 and Dec. 29.
AAA data shows 90% of Marylanders are getting behind the wheel, pushing officials to warn them to be cautious driving during the winter.
Maryland State Police said in a news release it would be increasing highway safety patrols during this period of holiday travel. The Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration’s Highway Safety Office reports that 537 people died on the state’s roads this year.
“Data shows us that serious and fatal crashes increase during the holiday season and by taking extra precautions such as slowing down, paying attention and driving sober, we can save lives and arrive alive,” Paul J. Wiedefeld, the secretary of the Maryland Department of Transportation, said in a release.
AAA predicts there will be a nearly 8% increase in air travel from last year, estimating over 134,000 Marylanders will be flying this holiday season.
“We anticipate about 34,000 departing passengers today, Friday, December 20. Today is expected to be one of the busiest travel days of the holiday period,” said Jonathan Dean, the director of communications for Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport.
Dean said they recommend travelers give themselves enough time for parking, ticketing and screening. For those waiting for arriving passengers, the cellphone lot is good for avoiding the terminal road, he said.
AAA predicts 116,990 Marylanders will travel by train, bus or cruise this holiday season — a 12% jump from last year.
Beth Toll, the spokesperson for Amtrak, said this time of year isn’t an “unusually busy travel period” for the train system.
Maryland’s increase in holiday travelers is on par with national trends, as AAA predicts 119.3 million people will be traveling during this time period.
