The Baltimore County Fire Department said Monday it had extinguished a fire at a Dundalk recycling facility, ending a dayslong battle to stop the flames.

Crews first responded to the three-alarm blaze at the Owl Metals Inc. property in Southeast Baltimore County around 6 p.m. on Jan. 18. Part of a building at the plant collapsed, and emergency personnel advised drivers to avoid the area and closed several roads.

Then, in the middle of last week, the fire rekindled, which fire officers said was due to “an intense fire with a massive amount of combustibles.” They warned that such deep-seated fires could take days to put out completely.

The owner of the recycling plant told The Baltimore Banner last week the plant was damaged and was having electrical issues. The center purchases metals such as aluminum, copper, gold and silver.

The Maryland Department of the Environment issued an air quality advisory last week urging sensitive groups, such as older adults, to avoid outdoor activities in the area.
