Mayor Brandon Scott had a message for those heading into work Friday morning: Expect traffic delays.
A massive fire Thursday night had shut down Interstate 83 in both directions, as well as a section of Cold Spring Lane, and had led to the suspension of light rail service in the corridor.
By Friday morning, I-83 had reopened following Thursday night’s large fire at Camp Small, a wood recycling facility in Baltimore’s Woodberry neighborhood.
Northbound lanes of I-83 between Northern Parkway and Druid Park Lake Drive were reopened early Friday morning, and all lanes were cleared to reopen a little after 8 a.m., officials said.
However, drivers were being encouraged to use caution and consider alternate routes if possible.
Friday evening, the Baltimore Department of Transportation reported that “all roads and ramps on Cold Spring Lane are now open.” Officials had closed a section of Cold Spring Lane between Greenspring Avenue and Falls Road as crews battled the blaze.
Light rail service remained suspended Friday between Falls Road and North Avenue. Shuttle bus service was available to transport light rail riders between the affected stops, according to the Maryland Transit Administration.
Holly Arnold, the MTA’s administrator, said around 7:40 p.m. Friday on X that her team was “inspecting the [light rail] tracks now and anticipate opening with full service tomorrow morning.”
As fire crews worked to contain the fire late Thursday, Scott had said commuters should expect delays and plan accordingly. “We just have to allow them to do their work, and let them plan and strategize and execute as they have been thus far,” he said Thursday night.
Baltimore Polytechnic Institute and Western High School were also closed Friday due to the fire, according to Baltimore City Public Schools.
