My favorite part about watching sports is bellying up to a bar for a beer and wings — best served crispy and tossed in sauce, of course. And when it comes to the ongoing debate — drums or flats? — I’m squarely on team flats, as I find they tend to be juicier. With college basketball, the end of football season and baseball season on the horizon, every day seems to be a good day to partake in a plate of wings. Whether you’re carrying out or dining in, here are some of my go-to spots where you might find your new favorite.

Black Flag Social House

Black Flag Brewing Company, one of my go-to spots, opened a full-service bar and restaurant in Marriottsville early last year. The menu, which already includes great bites like the disco fries, slathered in gravy and garlic fondue, also features five different flavors of wings.

On a recent visit, I tried both the Slap Sauce and Wet Honey Lemon Pepper options. The former is a housemade vinegar-forward barbecue sauce that struck a really nice balance between smoky and sweet. But the latter is my personal favorite. Lemon pepper-flavored wings tend to be dry rubs, and I personally love a wet sauce coating my wings. Black Flag’s version was covered well, tangy from the lemon but still with a touch of sweetness from the honey as well as a subtle peppery flavor. It was simply delightful.

Other flavor choices for the wings include BF Buffalo, Honey Garlic and Chipotle BBQ. They all have a crisp bite on the outside with a juicy center. Each order came with eight wings and a side of blue cheese or ranch.

Jumbo Jumbo Chicken & Tea

Jumbo Jumbo Chicken & Tea is primarily a carryout spot that serves Taiwanese fare, and if you know anything about Taiwanese chicken wings, it’s that they are always so crispy. You can audibly hear a crunch when biting into the ones at Jumbo Jumbo. Each order comes with six wings, and while there are four different flavor options, my wife and I love the dry spicy kind so much that we can’t bring ourselves to try anything else.

There’s just the right amount of heat to keep you coming back to these juicy wings bite after bite without absolutely decimating your mouth. If you need to stave off any seasoning that’s too hot to handle, though, they do sell bubble tea — an elite accompaniment

HoCo Brew Hive

  • 4910 Waterloo Road, Ellicott City

HoCo Brew Hive is a sports bar that’s perfect for meeting up with a group of friends to watch the game. It’s outfitted with tables in a variety of sizes that can easily be pushed together, plus a bunch of great bar bites. In addition to several flavors of wings, buffalo cauliflower is also on the menu, a great option if you’re with someone who doesn’t eat meat.

During a recent visit, I ordered Old Bay wings (a Maryland classic!) and a Sweet Heat option. The Old Bay wings use a dry rub that gives the wings a crunchy exterior. Make sure your drink is full when eating these, as the Old Bay flavor can get salty after a few bites. The Sweet Heat stood out to me because they were listed as an independent menu item, separate from the other wing choices. True to their name, they were sweet and had some heat that kept building the more of them we ate. The crispy onion straws that came with it were a nice touch for some added crunch. Each order came with 10 wings and a side of blue cheese or ranch.

The Canopy

The Canopy may be known for its barbecue, but the wings are not to be skipped. They come in a few different size denominations (six, 12, 25, 50 or 100) which makes them a great option if you’re having friends or family over. They offer six different flavors, but buffalo and barbecue are what I tend to gravitate toward. The former was the traditional hot sauce that wings are known for, with heat that builds with every bite — truly a classic. The vinegar-forward barbecue sauce on the latter was thinner than others I’ve had, but I think that leads to a better-coated chicken wing. If you’re already a fan of it on the restaurant’s pit beef, a crispy chicken wing is a great vessel for the sauce as well.

Though it started as a carryout-only spot, the business recently expanded to add a bit of seating next door. It’s the perfect scenario if you simply cannot wait until you get home to dive into their delicious food.
