Cocina Luchadoras, a restaurant whose handmade tacos, cheerful décor and feminist artwork made it a staple in Upper Fells Point, has closed after eight years in business.

Owner Rosalyn Vera said in an Instagram post Friday that she couldn’t keep up with the rising costs of running the business. “I am sad to say goodbye to a location that has given so much to the Upper Fells community,” she wrote.

Despite its popularity with customers, the future of Cocina Luchadoras had appeared increasingly murky in recent months. Last summer, Vera announced the eatery would move from 253 S. Broadway to a different spot in the neighborhood at 1801 E. Lombard St., but scrapped those plans a week later.

Saturday evening, though, Vera announced she would actually begin a “residency” at that location, which is currently home to Saunter Corner Bar. The hours will be 11 a.m. through 3 p.m. weekdays.

In earlier years, Vera said she planned to open other locations of Cocina Luchadoras in Whitehall Market and in Mount Vernon, neither of which materialized. She also ran a now-closed ice cream shop in Highlandtown called Hecho en Baltimore.

Vera did not respond to requests for comment.
