Juniet Ozturk, co-owner of Angeli’s Pizzeria, was in a race against time when he spotted a notably familiar face on the security cameras at the pizza shop’s Little Italy location.

Ozturk darted from a grand opening at the new spot in Bolton Hill to get there with his brother, jumping out at a red light and running the rest of the way, he said. Ozturk arrived just in time Friday to catch Dave Portnoy, a highly regarded pizza reviewer and founder of Barstool Sports, before he headed to his next stop.

Portnoy, who’s built a large pizza-eating presence through his One Bite reviews, was spotted at multiple pizza shops in the Baltimore area. Now, business owners and pizza patrons alike await his ratings, which he’ll likely share with his 4 million followers on TikTok alone.

“He’ll make a big difference for any pizza place,” Ozturk said, adding that he’s hoping for a positive review.

Portnoy ordered a plain slice of cheese pizza and sangria at Angeli’s. Ozturk said he ended up giving him a bottle because Portnoy enjoyed it so much.

Portnoy also paid a visit to Pizza John’s in Essex. Owner Brett Steall wasn’t sure who he was at first, but the instant rumblings from his employees, including his sons, quickly clued him in. Portnoy ordered cheese pizza and toured the kitchen with Steall. Portnoy shared that he was in the area for the Army-Navy game at Northwest Stadium in Landover. A photo of the visit posted on Facebook has been viewed at least 800,000 times, according to Steall.

Steall said their pizza might not be the crispy pie that Portnoy typically favors, but “it is what it is. ... We are just hoping it reminds people that we are here. It was a good morale booster for us.”

Portnoy was also spotted in a photo on social media at Frank’s Pizza and Pasta on Bel Air Road in Baltimore. The post read: @stoolpresidente was in town Frank’s fam!

Portnoy’s followers tend to do more than just watch his videos. They act on his reviews, which can oftentimes mean more business. A pizza shop owner in New Jersey told the New York Times that a single review from Portnoy was enough for him “to make enough money to remodel the whole place.”

Portnoy also hosts One Bite Pizza Festival, inviting dozens of his highly rated pizza parlors to participate in the ticketed event. This year’s festival was held in September at Randall’s Island Park in New York City.

Back in Baltimore, speculation and questions about how Portnoy might rate his recent pizza shop visits quickly filled social media. People also wanted to know if Portnoy brought Miss Peaches, his rescue pup who has over 1 million followers on Instagram.

One commenter under Angeli’s Facebook post wrote: “You know you’re going to get the highest score he can give cuz you all have the BEST PIZZA IN THE AREA!”

Another comment, under Pizza John’s post, read: “He knows! You don’t come all the way to Essex MD on a whim.”

Portnoy was also spotted on Friday by an eagle-eyed, weekly customer at Matthew’s Pizzeria near Patterson Park, though employees there were mum Saturday. Brandon Pratta was walking his daughter when he saw a small group with a camera outside of Matthew’s. He asked Portnoy how he liked the pizza and took a photo with him.

Pratta said he regretted not asking about other local places Portnoy visited, but he “was a little nervous because it was just so random.”

Ozturk and Steall said they don’t know when — or how — the ratings will land. They’re just like everyone else, wondering how Baltimore will stack up against other cities on Portnoy’s pizza tour.
