Angel Reese — the WNBA player and former college basketball star from Baltimore County — has earned a spot on the cover of Vogue magazine.

Reese, who grew up in Randallstown, is featured in a story from Maya Singer that highlights the merging of sport and fashion. In the article, Reese said she grew up around basketball and enmeshed in fashion.

“But I was a fashion girlie from young too,” Reese said in the piece. “I was always in my mom’s closet, putting on her stuff. I liked to carry a purse. Hair done. I wanted to look put together. I still do.”

It’s a mindset that followed Reese into her basketball career. While playing for Louisiana State University (and leading the team to its first national championship) she earned the nickname “Bayou Barbie” not only because she was playing in Louisiana but because she brought fashion to the court — getting her nails, hair and eyelashes done before games.

In a post on social media Wednesday, promoting her appearance with the magazine, Reese wrote, “I ‘covered up’ and gave y’all COVERGIRL,” a reference to criticism she drew after posting a revealing outfit on Instagram for New Year’s Eve.

Reese had a standout rookie year with the Chicago Sky, though it ended early with an injury. And, while Caitlin Clark won WNBA Rookie of the Year, Reese received a vote for the honor.

Her appearance in Vogue comes a few months after Reese debuted fashion partnerships with Reebok and Reese’s Pieces. The Reebok collection includes a T-shirt that says in bold pink lettering, “Pretty girl but she a baller” and sneakers trimmed with a blue not too dissimilar from the colors of the Chicago Sky.

In the Vogue cover photo, Reese appears in a red Versace dress. Inside the magazine, she’s photographed in a gold Stella McCartney dress and a Loewe coat and Éterne bodysuit.
