The holiday season is in full swing in Howard County. There are plenty of winterland events to get into over the next week, it was difficult to only pick a few.
From the classic Breakfast with Santa event to Savage Mill’s Yuletide maker’s market, here are some things to do in the county for the week ending Wednesday, Dec. 18.
Smooth Jazz Fridays
6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday
Kick back, relax and unwind from a long work week with some smooth jazz with Kim Maiden. Catch Maiden at the Harriet Tubman Cultural Center.
Doors open at 6 p.m. with music starting an hour later. Tickets are available for $35 in advance and $40 at the door. Food and beverages will also be available for purchase.
Can’t catch Kim Maiden this week? No worries, you have two more chances on Jan. 10 and Valentine’s Day.
Breakfast with Santa
8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday
Santa and fire trucks. A classic combination. Enjoy breakfast with Santa Claus at the Savage Volunteer Fire Company station Saturday morning.
Tickets will be for sale at the door, $15 for adults and $12 for kids 3-14 years old. Children under 3 eat for free.
Frozen Fest
Saturday & Sunday, 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
The low temperatures on Saturday and Sunday are expected to dip into the mid-20s and mid-30s, respectively, making Frozen Fest’s name rather opportune.
This frosty festival, at the Robinson Nature Center, features an outdoor puppet show, a winter walk through the woods and roasting marshmallows. Visitors can also learn about winter constellations in the center’s planetarium and have photos taken with Santa between 10 a.m. and noon each day.
Tickets are $10 per person. Kids under age 2 are admitted free. Robinson Nature Center members can use a discount code to get tickets for $7 each. Registering in advance is recommended.
Savage Mill Yuletide
Every weekend through Dec. 22
Did you know Savage was once a year-round Christmas town? While it was many, many years ago and a short-lived venture, Savage Mill honors the town’s history each holiday season.
At the Yuletide Maker’s Market at Savage Mill, peruse through all of the locally owned small businesses at the mill and take photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus.
Special events this weekend include a Friday lunch chat called “The Evolution of Glass Christmas Ornaments in America: the late 1800′s to the 1950’s” at the More Than Java Cafe and a walking tour of Santa Heim, Merryland, Savage’s year-round Christmas Village, on Sunday afternoon.
A historical exhibition all about Santa Heim will be on display in the Mill’s New Weave Building through Jan. 10.
Christmas tea & cookie decorating
12 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday
Spend your Sunday afternoon sipping on Christmas tea with a four-course meal at The Elkridge Furnace Inn. You will also have the chance to decorate sugar cookies as well.
The four-course tea includes scones, soup and salad, a savory course and of course, sweets! Enjoy cookies and biscotti as you decorate your own cookies to take home.
Make sure to secure a seat at one of the tables.
Gingerbread Fun!
10:15 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Tuesday
The Miller Branch library is taking its own twist on the classically beloved rhyme: “Run, run, run as fast as you can. You’ll never catch me, I’m the gingerbread man.”
After listening to the traditional fairytale at the library Tuesday morning, kids will then follow crumbs around the library to catch the gingerbread man.
Tickets will be available at the children’s desk 15 minutes before the event begins.
Ugly Sweater Dance Party
Starts at 7 p.m. Wednesday
Head on over to Reckless Shepherd Brewery on Wednesday night to hear Butte and Friends’ final jam of the year. This band features a group of rotating musicians that play horns and fill rooms with “sweet tunes and grooves.”
Get ready to dance all night long and, if you wish, sport your favorite ugly sweater.
