Two years after organizing the first union at an Apple retail store, workers in Towson are preparing to take another unprecedented step: Becoming the first to go on strike against Apple.

The union voted “overwhelmingly” to authorize a strike, according to a Saturday news release from the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers’ Coalition of Organized Retail Employees.

It’s unclear when the strike might take place. Bargaining is set to resume May 21, union spokesman DeLane Adams said.

The union says it represents about 100 workers at the store inside the Towson Town Center. Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The looming strike has garnered national attention. In June 2022, the store became the first unionized Apple retail outlet in the country. Contract negotiations began in 2023, and workers met monthly with Apple at a Baltimore hotel for contract negotiations. By April 2023, workers accused the company of dragging its feet.

The vote to authorize the strike is the latest escalation in the bargaining process. According to the union, negotiations are stuck on “work-life balance, unpredictable scheduling practices disrupting personal lives, and wages failing to align with the area’s cost of living.”

Workers at an Apple store in Oklahoma voted in 2022 to unionize after the successful unionization in Towson. Over the weekend, workers at a New Jersey Apple store voted against unionizing with the Communication Workers of America, according to Reuters.
