Jazzy New Year at Blackwall Barn & Lodge

The Howard County Economic Development Authority is hosting its annual New Year’s business event at the Blackwall Barn & Lodge in the Merriweather District. County business owners, entrepreneurs and anyone interested in the local business scene is invited to attend. Tickets cost $85 per person.

Looking for a happy hour without alcohol? Join Laura Petri for an alternative happy hour at the Yoga Center of Columbia. Her Flow into the Week class is designed to help you unwind and smoothly transition into the weekend. The class features gentle movements of slow flow yoga with a mix of yin yoga meditative stretches. Attend the Friday evening flow from home or in the studio. Registration is $24.

Make a fused glass sushi plate

6-8:30 p.m. Friday

Spend Friday night making your own sushi plate at the Columbia Youth and Teen Center. Fused glass art is the process of melting two or more pieces of glass together, usually in a kiln, to connect the pieces of glass. Friday’s class is for beginners and intermediate glass art students. Anyone 15 and older can sign up. When arriving at the youth center, please ring the doorbell.

Free Krav Maga class

11 a.m.-12:15 p.m. Saturday

Anyone 15 and older can unleash their inner warrior at Krav Maga class on Saturday morning at Watchdog Krav Maga in Elkridge. At this free trial class, learn self-defense moves from expert instructors. No experience necessary, but come ready to rock.

DJ Night at Pub Dog

10 p.m. Saturday

Looking for Saturday night plans? Head on over to Pub Dog in Columbia for DJ Night. Saturday, DJ 2 Tru will be spinning tunes starting at 10 p.m., but you can enjoy some brewskis and pizza before, during and after the set. Pub Dog closes at 2 a.m. nightly, and the kitchen closes 30 minutes before.

Shrek-themed drag brunch

3 p.m. Sunday

Once upon a time, in 2001, Mike Myers voiced a green ogre in the box office hit “Shrek.” Everyone got “All Star” by Smash Mouth stuck in their heads and now, over 20 years later, this animated movie series is more mainstream than ever. Absolutely Dragulous is bringing its talents to Lost Ark Distilling Company on Sunday. The morning show for the “Get Out Me Swamp Drag Brunch!” is sold out, but don’t worry, an afternoon show was added. Doors open at 2 p.m., the show begins at 3 p.m. Get your tickets here. Lost Ark does not serve food. You can bring your own food or order from a menu of local businesses that will deliver to the distillery.

Learn about the history of sculpture as you explore how to sculpt a 3-dimensional work of art. The workshop will include traditional materials like modeling clay for sculptures but also more out-of-the box materials like wire, recyclables and paper. Sign up for this one-day art workshop here. Cost includes all supplies. Anyone 18 and older can register, sign-ups close at midnight Tuesday.
