Baltimore County police on Monday said they arrested a man in possession of what they described as an AK-47 rifle near the site of a recent shooting in Towson that has heightened vigilance by law enforcement officials.
Jaquan McCain, 20, was arrested on Thursday after a traffic stop by officers near Meteor Court and Cloister Road, a little over a mile from Loch Raven Boulevard, where a fiery car crash and shooting left one person dead and nine injured. The moments leading up to the incident last Tuesday was caught on security camera video by a nearby business.
Police say they recovered several illegal items during the stop, “including a stolen vehicle, a loaded AK-47, an AK-47 magazine containing 10 rounds of 7.62 ammunition, and a ‘Glock switch,’ which, when attached, changes a semi-automatic firearm into one that is fully automatic.” Online court documents show McCain faces nearly a dozen charges, including motor vehicle theft, loaded handgun in a vehicle, possession of a firearm and illegal possession of ammunition.
The recovered weapon was not connected to last week’s shooting, officials said.
The Parkville resident could also face prosecution based on an October 2024 law that prohibits people from having such switches. He’s being held without bail at Baltimore County Detention Center and did not have a lawyer as of Monday afternoon.
