Choosing an independent school for your child is one of the most important decisions a parent will make. You want to take your time and make an informed decision, one that takes into consideration an array of factors, but most importantly, you want to find a school where your child will thrive and be happy. Hence, it’s critical to involve your child in the decision-making process so that he or she is vested in the process and feels heard and seen.
One of the best things about independent schools is that they offer choices; however, sometimes that can be overwhelming. Do you prefer a single-sex or coeducational school? Religious or nonsectarian? A day or boarding school? A school where your child will attend from kindergarten all the way to 12th grade, or one that is limited to certain grades, such as high school?
Take a breath. Sit down with your child, other family members, and possibly some close friends to talk it out. A chart or spreadsheet detailing these and other factors can make it easier to sort through it all and find a school that best meets your family’s needs.
Research, research, research
When it comes to research, the internet can definitely be your friend. Most schools have websites packed full of information on class size, philosophy, mission, testimonials from graduates, and how to request more information, as well as photos of the campus and facilities. You’ll want to ensure that the school is accredited by recognized educational bodies and see if the location is convenient to your home or office.
Once you’ve compiled some information, visit the school in person. There you will not only get a feel of the campus and the culture, but also meet with faculty, staff, and parents of current students. If possible, see if you can sit in on a class to get a feel of the teaching style and student makeup and talk to current students and alumni who can share their experiences with your child. Some schools also offer the opportunity for a prospective student to spend the day at the school to see if they feel like they would fit in.
Also, ask about how involved parents are in the school and how it communicates with parents on key issues or developments. School safety should also be asked about.
Academic approach
Of course, at the heart of the school decision is academics. In the end, the number one goal for most parents is for their child to succeed academically. If your child is super focused on STEM or robotics, for example, see if it’s offered. Or, maybe you are looking for a liberal arts curriculum. If so, ask the admissions office what their approach is. If applicable, ensure there are resources for students with learning differences or special needs.
In addition to excellent faculty, inquire about what academic support services the school offers, such as guidance counselors, mental health professionals, and those who specialize in college placement for older students. Does the school encourage internships or other career-focused opportunities?
Extra-curricular opportunities
School is not all about the classroom. Are there athletic teams? If your child is artistically inclined, ask about music, theater, and other creative pursuits. How about social clubs? Maybe your child loves chess, debates, or student government—if so, ask about those opportunities.
School culture
Finding a school with a culture that aligns with your family is also important. Many times, the culture is dictated by the administration and faculty, so feel free to ask them about their academic philosophy, as well as diversity and inclusion initiatives. You may also want to see if the school’s student discipline approach aligns with yours.
Finance
Obviously, the cost to attend an independent school must be a factor. What’s included with tuition? Are there other fees?
Some schools offer financial aid, scholarships, low-interest loans, and payment plans, and some offer discounts on prepayment of full tuition, so make sure those options are outlined clearly for you.
You have a lot to consider, but don’t underestimate your gut. Sometimes you, your family, and child will just feel “at home” at a certain school, and that should not be ignored.
