After two weeks of “Hard Knocks” focusing on the Pittsburgh Steelers with a sprinkling of Ravens, Baltimore got the spotlight near the start of episode three.
The introduction was all about Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, of course, because he’s emerged as a star of the HBO series, but the episode quickly turned its focus to Baltimore, with an opening shot of the Ravens’ practice facility in Owings Mills.
After getting approximately 74 seconds of airtime in the second episode, the Ravens dominated the first 15 minutes of the latest installment.
“Hard Knocks: In-Season with the AFC North” switched up its format for the third week, choosing one leader from each team to follow, so every team got a similar amount of time.

Inside linebacker Roquan Smith represented the Ravens, the cameras following him from his drive to practice and then onto the field for game day. He was the same Smith that Ravens fans know and love. His talk of violent football was interspersed with constant jokes.
And, when Smith’s segment was over, the Ravens were not featured again until the show’s closing. But that should change next week with the upcoming Ravens-Steelers game, which could decide the division.
Here are takeaways from the episode:
Best Smith moment
As former teammate Patrick Queen loved to tell people, Smith doesn’t stop talking. He’s got jokes, and “Hard Knocks” shared a few of them. It was entertaining to hear Smith ribbing his teammates throughout practice. He told rookie wide receiver Devontez Walker he’s got to bulk up because his biceps are too skinny. Luckily for Walker, he emerged from the New York Giants game a hero after making his first NFL touchdown catch.
Also interesting: Smith showed he keeps up to date with the news when he pointed to the sky while on the bench and mentioned how people are saying the birds are actually drones — a reference to the multiple reports of “mystery drones” in New Jersey.

Best of John Harbaugh
Harbaugh’s sideline quotes left much to be desired in the first episode, when it sounded like he was talking to the mic instead of naturally reacting. But he stepped his game up this week. He dared to crack jokes. After Walker’s touchdown, he bragged to all his coaches that it was “his” play that led to the score. Then he quipped that it was only his play if it worked.
That’s a lot more than he gave to reporters in the postgame press conference, which was, “We kind of talked about it all week — it was a play. ... We had a couple plays in there like that take routes like that where he’d have a shot at it, [and] we worked on them all week.”
Wish we’d seen it
Yet again, there was not a peep about wide receiver Diontae Johnson. As fellow Ravens reporter Jonas Shaffer pointed out last week, can you call it all-access if you can’t share the storyline of his suspension? And there’s more drama with the news that Johnson and the team “mutually agreed” the receiver would be excused from team activities for the week.
As Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter Brian Batko pointed out on a podcast, the show has also excluded the drama surrounding Steelers receiver George Pickens and criticism over his lack of effort.
Oh, and it failed to include one of the most viral moments from this week’s NFL slate: Tomlin telling a referee to “get the f--- away from me.”

Touching moment
It’s hard for the Browns’ portion of the show to be anything but depressing at this point, as indicated by the introductory shot of the team meeting where the players and coaches talk about how they’re out of the playoffs.
But this episode’s format, which is focused more on individual players, allowed the Browns to be featured in one of the most touching scenes. The show followed cornerback Denzel Ward and captured the moment when he and his mom found out he’s the team’s Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee. It was heartwarming to see his mother’s pride.
Runner up: Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts stopping Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson after Philadelphia’s 27-13 win to tell Wilson how much he admires him and how grateful he is that Wilson paved the way for dual-threat quarterbacks.
Glad they caught it
Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase has emerged as one of the season’s most likable characters. So of course the show chose him as the Bengal to follow. He was entertaining throughout, but it was great to see the Bengals allowed the show’s producers to include Chase’s reaction to the touchdown that wasn’t against the Tennessee Titans.
Safety Jordan Battle scooped up a fumble and appeared to score, but he lost control of the ball before crossing the goal line. Chase dropped a few swear words and laughed about not knowing what happened until he saw his coach’s face. It was a very honest moment in a tough situation.

Former Ravens features
Geno Stone got some love after a season spent struggling alongside one of the league’s worst defenses. An unlikely hero for the Ravens last season, Stone has not had the same success with his new team. But the show captured his interception against the Titans, as well as his teammates’ reactions.
“Hard Knocks” also featured a little moment between Queen and Tomlin, whom Queen hated as a Raven. Since becoming a Steeler, Queen has told the Pittsburgh media that he’s built a strong relationship with Tomlin, and they shared a grin as they talked about preparing for Eagles running back Saquon Barkley. Unfortunately for Queen, he and his new team didn’t fare much better against Barkley and the Eagles than his old team did.
Coolest edit
As Smith talked about how much he looked up to Ravens legend Ray Lewis, the episode cut back and forth between Lewis quotes and Smith quotes, Lewis hits and Smith hits. It was a smooth and meaningful edit that helped illustrate the importance of the linebacker position in this city.
Best quote from a non-Raven
“Three will settle down. Just talk in a soothing voice,” Tomlin after Wilson had several passes tipped.
Wish list for next week
He probably won’t agree with this, but the “Hard Knocks” crew needs to follow Queen as he prepares for his first game back in Baltimore. He might not have been as pissed off as he expected in the first Ravens-Steelers game, but he’s going to be walking into a stadium full of angry ex-Queen fans.

“Hard Knocks” should also follow Johnson to see what it’s like having to sit out this game against his former team, but history shows that’s unlikely to happen.
