Just when it seemed the Ravens-Diontae Johnson drama was over, the team went back for more, claiming the wide receiver off waivers from the Houston Texans.

Johnson won’t be awarded to the Ravens until after the Super Bowl, though, meaning he is ineligible to play this postseason.

Why would the Ravens reunite with a player whose brief tenure in Baltimore was filled with drama, especially if he can’t bolster their weakened roster following Zay Flowers’ injury?

Well, Johnson becomes an unrestricted free agent in the offseason, and if he signs with another team, the Ravens receive a compensatory pick.

They’re betting that Johnson will garner interest from teams despite how chaotic his behavior has been.

Johnson’s saga dates back to his days in Pittsburgh. ESPN reported he yelled at teammates in the locker room in November 2023. The Steelers traded their 2019 third-round pick, who was their second-leading receiver, to the Carolina Panthers ahead of the 2024 season.

Johnson became the Panthers’ top target. But he also became a critic of the team, saying he couldn’t play every position and make every play.

So, less than a year after acquiring him, the Panthers traded Johnson (and a sixth-round pick) to the Ravens for a 2025 fifth-rounder.

Johnson lasted 52 days with the Ravens. However, he made it through only four games on the active roster. Following the Philadelphia Eagles game, when he refused to enter the game, the Ravens suspended him for one game.

When Johnson’s suspension ended, he and the Ravens “mutually agreed” he wouldn’t participate in team activities for the next week. The Ravens placed Johnson on waivers before the end of the week.

The Texans picked him up three days later and two days before they played the Ravens. However, Johnson was not active for that game.

Johnson played in the Texans' final game of the regular season and their first playoff game, a win over the Los Angeles Chargers. Over two games, he made three catches for 24 yards.

ESPN reported he was visibly frustrated in the Texans’ locker room after his lack of targets. That was a scene that played out in Baltimore, as well.

Twenty-three days after claiming him, the Texans waived Johnson. Twenty-six days after waiving him, the Ravens claimed him.
