Douglas DeLeaver, a proud husband and father who spent his life blazing trails for Black law enforcement officers in Maryland and across the country, died Oct. 16 of heart failure. He was 77.

Richard Berkeley, of Baltimore, was a man of faith who prioritized his family above all else. He was a passionate investor, proud alumnus of the University of Virginia and an outdoorsman who loved fishing. He died on Oct. 14 at the age of 72.

Eric Maul of Millersville was an exceptional flutist, a cherished son and brother, and a light in every room he walked into, family said. He died unexpectedly on Sept. 12 at his home in Provincetown, Mass. He was 33.

Lutherville native Rachel Yaffe used TikTok to inspire others to live a positive, healthy lifestyle and chronicled living with a fatal disease. She died on Oct. 11 from a rare liver cancer at age 27.

Kathy and Matthew Schmale, both 63, died early Tuesday in a five-alarm fire that affected at least eight homes on Keswick Road in Hampden, family said.
