The week after Christmas, we all want to be kind of cozy. But if your New Year’s resolution is to become more of a get-up-and-go person, we have some activities to start your week off. From parties to pickleball, here are seven things to do in Baltimore County this week.

A Good Goodall Movie

2-4 p.m Thursday

“Jane’s Journey” chronicles the life of one of our greatest conservationists, Jane Goodall, as she left her home in England for an extraordinary trip to Tanzania, where she became a leading expert on chimpanzees. Catch the film at the Pikesville Branch of the Baltimore County Public Library as part of its Pop-Up Cinema Series.

A Late New Year’s Party

Noon-2 p.m. Friday

If you missed the deadline — believe me, we understand — you make sure old acquaintances are not forgotten at the New Year’s Procrastinators Party from noon to 2 p.m. Friday at the Overlea-Fullerton Senior Center. Mr. Charisma will be crooning the tunes that made Bobby Darin and Frank Sinatra famous. The cost is $10, but the entertainment may well be priceless. Crudités will be served.

A Glow in the Dark Paint Party

2:30-4:00 p.m. Saturday

Head over to the county library’s White Marsh Branch, where staff will dim the lights and you can get in touch with your inner Picasso — the neon version. Tickets for this popular, free event will be available 15 minutes before it begins, so arrive early.

Arbutus Train Garden

11. a.m to 6 p.m. Saturday

With the train garden season coming to an end, catch the last days at the Arbutus Volunteer Fire Department’s train garden, with new designs every year. There is a new Lego display this year and four platforms, each with a different theme. The firehouse also hosts another train garden that used to be on display at Arbutus Auto Painting and Body Works. Now in its 30th year, chances are your parents and maybe even grandparents remember some old favorites.

A Guide to Our Birds

10-11 a.m. Monday

Do you know the difference between an egret and a heron? Do you know when warbler season begins in Maryland? Or the best place to find a rare lifer bird? These questions and more will be answered at Maryland Birds, hosted by the Cockeysville Senior Center Monday. In my experience, it takes far longer than an hour to learn the ins and outs of our fearless flyers, but this workshop can get you started. No fee.

Poetry Reading

6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday

This free event at Manor Mill in Monkton is the ideal place to try out some of your newest poetic work. The first Monday of each month, Monkton poet Robert Bowie Jr. and British poet Mel Edden host the reading. If you’re brave enough to take to the open mic, please bring some paper copies of your work. If you have a book, feel free to sell it at the event. These open-mic events feature established poets who have published work and also offer a chance for new writers to develop their voice.

Outdoor Ice Skating

Open 7 days a week, varying hours

If you’re looking for a fun way to burn off those holiday cookies, White Marsh has got you covered. Its outdoor rink is open until February. You can reserve a spot in advance, or be more spur-of-the-moment and just show up. Know anyone with a January birthday? You can rent out this rink for parties. Show your ticket at many shops and restaurants on The Avenue, and you can get discounts on meals, appetizers and desserts. Coldstone Creamery is even offering a buy one, get one free for those who say it’s never too cold for ice cream. I tend to agree. Pumpkin pie may be only for fall and Thanksgiving, but mint chocolate chip is for all year.
