Marylanders woke to a sheet of snow Sunday. As the day progressed, that precipitation never really stopped. It turned into a harsh sleet.

The Baltimore region saw 7-9 inches of precipitation, its most in years. Cockeysville led the way with 10 inches.

All that snowfall won’t melt quickly. Meteorologists encouraged residents to shovel and salt on Monday, when the temperatures will be in the upper 20s. That’s comparatively warm to Tuesday and the rest of the week, when each day is expected to see temperatures in the single digits.

Residents have begun to dig vehicles out of wintry cocoons, but others might stay put for a few days. Many schools, government offices and other locations announced Sunday that they’ll be closed Monday — and possibly longer.

Here’s what to know:

⛄ Snow, ice, cold: Snow started falling overnight, and Maryland is under a winter storm warning until Monday. Forecasters say icy conditions and extreme cold will linger into next week.

❄️ Cold weather safety: If you plan to shovel snow or be out in the cold, here’s how to protect yourself.

🚗 When will roads be cleared?: It could take days for plows to reach you, but you can monitor their progress on county tracking sites.

✈️ Closures and cancellations: Thousands of flights have been canceled nationwide. Libraries, recreational facilities and universities have announced closures. One weatherman thinks schools will be closed all week. If so, that could extend the school year for some Maryland students.

🔌 Power outages: The storm brought ice and the potential for power outages. Here’s what to know if your power goes out.
