After some literally harbor-freezing days, January will end with rain and warmer temperatures in the Baltimore region, according forecasts from the National Weather Service.

Cody Ledbetter, a meteorologist in the Baltimore/Washington Office of the National Weather Service, said to expect moderate to heavy rain in the next few hours until late Friday evening. Rainfall could total anywhere from about half an inch to three-quarters of an inch, he said.

Temperatures will reach the mid-40s throughout the weekend, with a forecast high of 59 degrees on Monday in Baltimore. Ledbetter said the warmer weather will likely last at least through Tuesday.

It’s been one of the coldest winters in Maryland in years, with a polar vortex lowering temperatures to single digits and causing schools to close earlier this month.

Forecast highs for the region through Monday include 55 degrees in Annapolis, 58 degrees in Columbia and 56 degrees in Cockeysville.
