Every time there’s a snowstorm, pictures of ravaged grocery store shelves start making their way around the Internet. Barren are the usually bountiful sections of eggs, bread and milk.

When you’re done eating those egg and milk sandwiches, you might want to play in the snow. You’ll need another hot snowstorm commodity: a sled.

Maybe you’re a saucer aficionado, holding on to both sides and rushing down a hill in the shape of a human boulder. Or maybe you’re waxing up a more classic toboggan. My parents keep a real throwback, a wood-and-steel flexible flyer, in their garage. It’s collected dust for decades.

If you don’t have a sled, there may be time to get one before Monday. Jim McLaughlin, an employee of Princeton Sports on Falls Road in Baltimore County, said the sled business has been booming this weekend. Princeton has sold dozens since Saturday, and the store was packed Sunday afternoon, McLaughlin said.

The Baltimore Banner thanks its sponsors. Become one.

“It’s super busy right now, for sure,” he said via phone.

Sleds are not exactly an item that’s bought every day, and Princeton Sports keeps its supply in a nearby warehouse, which employees have visited a handful of times to resupply just this weekend.

Where to sled

Once you have your sled, you’ll want to scope out where to go shred. Sledding hills aren’t secret like a prized fishing hole — the best ones are pretty obviously the biggest hills that are closest to you.

If you’re a Baltimore resident in and around Hampden or Charles Village, Councilmember Odette Ramos’ office sent out a winter weather bulletin with choice sledding spots included.

Ramos said the best hills in her district are on the North Charles Street side of the Wyman Park Dell, Clifton Park near Harford Road, St. Lo Drive by the baseball fields and Stony Run’s lower meader near the entrance on Craycombe and Tudor Arms.

If you’re over west, maybe try Druid Hills Park. If you’re over east, Patterson Park has great slopes. For those of you in South Baltimore, maybe do not sled down Federal Hill and into Key Highway … please.
