Howard County Police identified the man arrested in connection with a fatal domestic shooting in Columbia early Monday morning that left two people dead.

DiAngelo Smith, 33, is charged with two counts of first-degree murder and related charges in the shooting death of his grandparents, police said.

Smith was taken into custody early Monday morning in the 6300 block of Red Haven Road in the Sewell’s Orchard neighborhood, where officers found Smith’s grandparents Jack Dee Stokes, 78, and Barbara Stokes, 65, dead.

Smith is being held without bail at the Howard County Detention Center, police said. His case did not appear in online court records as of Monday night.

Police said the investigation is ongoing, but they believe Smith was living in the home with his grandparents.

Officers were called to the area around 3 a.m. for a report of gunshots and found Smith with a gun in a vehicle parked outside of a residence, according to a police news release.

Inside the home, officers said they found two adults dead with gunshot wounds.

Howard County Executive Calvin Ball said in a statement Monday that he is working closely with Police Chief Gregory Der after several “unnerving” events around the county.

The jurisdiction recently has seen an increase in the number of domestic violence deaths, Ball said. More than half of Howard County homicide victims in 2024 were killed by a family member.

“We remain fortunate to have a dedicated community who comes together in the most challenging of times,” Ball said. “I implore you to please look out for your family members, neighbors and those in your lives who may be struggling in silence.”
