Baltimore County police responded early Wednesday afternoon to a man who had barricaded himself inside a room at the Comfort Inn in Towson to avoid being arrested.
The incident unfolded after Baltimore City police, Maryland State Police and U.S. Marshals attempted to arrest the man on an outstanding warrant for charges of first-degree assault, second-degree assault and wreckless endangerment.
The charges were issued by Baltimore City police on Aug. 29 against James Blackston, 46, according to Vernon Davis, a spokesperson for the Baltimore Police Department.
Since then, officers had been investigating Blackston’s whereabouts. They tracked him to the Comfort Inn on Wednesday morning.
Police presence remained heavy at the Comfort Inn, on the 8500 block of Loch Raven Boulevard, from 10 a.m. until about 12:45 p.m.
At that point, Blackston surrendered after Baltimore County officers used a flash-bang diversionary device, police said.
Blackston remains in Baltimore City police custody at this time.
A Comfort Inn staff member who answered the phone confirmed around 12:50 p.m. that outside of the police response, no one in the hotel was actively in harm’s way.
Trae Corbin, a spokesperson for the Baltimore County Police Department, said that some hotel guests were asked to shelter in place or evacuate for the duration of police activity at the Comfort Inn.
The Towson motel is located off Exit 29B of Interstate 695 and shares a parking lot with Total Wine & More. The motel is relatively isolated from pedestrian and vehicle traffic to other nearby businesses.
