A man has died after a more than three-hour standoff with police in Dundalk on Tuesday, which prompted warnings for residents to shelter in place and local schools to be put on lockout.
Baltimore County Police said shortly after 1 p.m. that the barricade situation had ended. The man, whom authorities did not identify, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.
Officers responded to the 2500 block of Gray Manor Terrace around 7:30 a.m. to investigate reports of overnight property damage. The quiet morning turned into a standoff when a man began shooting at officers from a window in a nearby home, police said.
The armed man barricaded himself inside the home, police said, and the county’s crisis negotiation team was called in to help with the response. Several other law enforcement agencies also responded, including the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

In addition to the man, police said a woman was in the home.
Police are still investigating what led to the overnight firearm discharge believed to have caused the property damage.

Situation quickly spiraled
Residents in a nearby home initially thought they heard fireworks or something similar overnight — only to wake up to bullet holes or other damage to their property, police spokesperson Joy Lepola-Stewart said.
Officers arrived in the morning to investigate the reported property damage, but then the situation quickly escalated.
Police descended on the neighborhood in Dundalk, and helicopters circled overhead. Around 9 a.m., police told residents nearby to shelter in place away from windows and external doors.

Police said four schools in the area — Battle Grove Elementary, Charlesmont Elementary, Battle Monument School and John Stricker Middle — were put in lockout. A lockout means classes continue and people can move around inside the building, but it’s secured from the outside. Baltimore County Public Schools didn’t respond to a request for comment.
The shelter-in-place warning and school lockouts were lifted when the barricade ended, police said.
