Howard County Police say four family members are dead and another one is seriously injured in an apparent murder-suicide in Elkridge Thursday evening.

Police were called to a home in the 6900 block of Norwood Ferry around 10 p.m. after neighbors placed multiple 911 calls to report hearing gunshots, police said in a news release.

One of the calls, police said, came from 61-year-old Nayyar Abbas Syed, who told dispatchers that he had shot his family and intended to kill himself. Inside the home, officers found the bodies of his wife Syeda Aalia Nayyar, 57; daughter Syeda Fatima, 25; and daughter-in-law, Alizey Fatima, 33.

They also found two men, Syed and his son Muhammad Ali Hamza, 31, with critical injuries. Syed’s infant granddaughter was also in the home but unharmed. She was taken to an area hospital for a wellness check and will be placed in the custody of a family member, police said in the news release.

Syed was taken to St. Agnes hospital and pronounced dead overnight Thursday. Hamza is being treated at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, police said.

The investigation into the deaths is ongoing, Howard County Police said in the release late Thursday morning.

All of the victims are believed to live at the home where they were found while Syed lived elsewhere. No evidence of forced entry was found.
