Police identified the man who died Wednesday after his car ran into a tree as Michael Patrick Fitzgerald Jr., 28, of Germantown.

Authorities and emergency personnel responded to a call around 1:19 a.m. near the intersection of Bethesda Church Road and Johnson Drive.

They found Fitzgerald unconscious inside a black 2025 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross and determined that the car was cruising on Bethesda Church Road when it veered from the roadway and struck a tree.

Fitzgerald, police said, was transported with severe injuries to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
