Luigi Mangione, a Maryland native, was charged Monday with murder in New York City in the shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. He was arrested on gun charges in Pennsylvania.

Mangione came from a sprawling and successful family in the Baltimore region and was the valedictorian at The Gilman School in 2016. His family said they’re “shocked” by the arrest, but haven’t said much else.

On Tuesday, the day after he was arrested, Mangione shouted something to reporters as he was escorted into court in Pennsylvania and details from his alleged “manifesto” leaked.

Extradition delayed

Mangione, 26, is contesting his extradition to New York, where he’s charged with murder, which means there could be a delay in his case there. He’s currently being held in Pennsylvania, where he was arrested and faces charges including carrying a gun without a license and forgery.

Blair County District Attorney Peter Weeks said his office will be ready whenever a judge schedules the extradition hearing.

“We do not intend to delay this defendant’s extradition to New York,” Weeks said. “Their prosecution should take precedence, and then ours will follow.”

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg will seek a governor’s warrant to secure extradition, which New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said she will sign.

‘Manifesto’ detailed

In a handwritten “manifesto,” the Associated Press reported, Mangione wrote that he acted alone and said “these parasites simply had it coming.”

An intelligence report from the New York Police Department, reviewed by The New York Times, indicates officials are worried that online reaction to Mangione’s alleged actions, including “celebrations of the killing,” could inspire others to view him as a “martyr and example to follow.”

Mangione’s missing year

Mangione dropped out of contact with family and friends earlier this year, and his mother filed a missing person report in San Francisco.

Piecing together his activity has been a puzzle, but it appears Mangione left Hawaii for back surgery in the summer of 2023 and spent some time in Japan earlier this year.

What we know from his online presence

Mangione has a large digital footprint. Social media accounts associated with him show participation in debates about philosophy, reviewing the Unabomber’s writings and posing on tropical hikes.

A social media profile associated with Mangione also shows an X-ray with four spinal screws, which were part of a surgery he required, a friend said.
