A police shooting in Baltimore County sent one person to the hospital and closed a section of Maryland Route 43 between Interstate 695 and Walther Boulevard, which is near White Marsh, authorities said Monday morning.

The Baltimore County Police Department said Monday afternoon that the officer involved has been put on administrative leave. The shooting victim, an adult man, was carrying a BB rifle, which resembled a firearm, the department said.

The man was sent to an area hospital and is expected to survive, police said. No details about the man’s age or identity were immediately available.

Authorities received calls about an armed man in the area around 8:05 a.m., Baltimore County Police spokeswoman Joy Lepola-Stewart said. Officers responded to the scene shortly thereafter.

The man was on foot, Lepola-Stewart said, and passing motorists flagged down officers to where the man was when they arrived. The only person to fire a gun was a county police officer, Lepola-Stewart said.

In instances where a police officer fatally shoots someone, the Maryland Attorney General’s Office will investigate. Because the man is expected to survive, county police will handle the investigation.

The ramp from the inner loop of I-695 to Route 43 was also closed, according to the State Highway Administration. Drivers were asked to use alternate routes.
