Police on Monday shot and killed a 26-year-old man in North Baltimore after he fled from officers and then began firing at police, Commissioner Richard Worley said at press conference.
Worley said officers were patrolling near the 4600 block of York Road when they saw a man running away after he saw them.
Police chased the man — three officers on foot and another in a police vehicle, Worley said.
The man pulled a gun and started shooting at police, hitting the cruiser four or five times, the chief said.

Officers returned fire, striking the armed man multiple times, Worley said. None of the officers was injured.
The man was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. He was identified Wednesday as Jai Marc Howell, of no fixed address.

The officers were to be placed on administrative leave pending an investigation led by the Office of the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division.

“None of those officers came out here wanting this to happen,” Mayor Brandon Scott said at a press briefing. “These folks are here to help protect you.”
There was a heavy police response at the site of shooting, a stretch of York Road that includes a mix of shops and rowhomes. A belt, a shoe and a pair of handcuffs were among the items scattered on the ground. A police cruiser with a damaged back right window rested on the curb.
Several blocks of York Road were closed, police said, and people were asked to avoid the area.
This was the second reported police-involved shooting in Baltimore this year, though the first involving the Baltimore Police Department. A bailiff shot an an armed man at the East Baltimore District Courthouse in late January. The man shot himself and later died, officials said.
The Independent Investigations Division is asking anyone with information about the incident, including cell phone or private surveillance video, to contact them at 410-576-7070 or by email at IID@oag.state.md.us.
