Maryland authorities are investigating after Baltimore County Police officers fatally shot a man Wednesday night amid an hourslong barricade incident in Dundalk.
The Maryland Office of the Attorney General said Thursday that its Independent Investigations Division, which investigates fatal incidents in the state in which police are involved, confirmed that Baltimore County Police responded to reports of shots fired after multiple 911 calls on Larkhall Road around 8:30 p.m.
When they arrived, officers saw a man standing at a second-floor window and believed he was armed. Several officers opened fire, striking him.
A tactical team was called to the scene, and police established a barricade around the home. About two hours later, officers entered the residence and found the man dead on the first floor from apparent gunshot wounds.
Police said two firearms were recovered near the window where officers had first seen the man. No officers were injured.
Neighbors told WJZ that they heard two gunshots, followed by an argument, before police arrived. Once police arrived, they heard more shots.
Officers urged people to avoid the area Wednesday night, and residents were told to shelter in place. Several cars, including armored vehicles, were parked in front of a house on Larkhall Road, and police stood with rifles behind vehicles.
Baltimore County Police officers shot at and struck the man in response to “actions of the armed subject,” police said in a statement Thursday. Six officers discharged their firearms, police said.
Around 2 a.m., police said on social media the barricade was over but added that residents should expect a continued police presence in the area while authorities investigate.
Larkhall Road is nestled between Inverness Park and Key Landing Boat House on the peninsula between Lynch Cove and Chink Creek.
The IID investigates incidents in Maryland involving police action that results in fatal or life-threatening injuries to civilians. Since Oct. 1, 2021, the office has conducted at least 79 investigations into fatal or near-fatal incidents, according to its website. Lawmakers gave the office the authority to prosecute police-involved deaths in 2023.
The six Baltimore County Police officers, who were equipped with body-worn cameras, are on administrative leave.
The shooting in Dundalk comes after Baltimore County Police on Tuesday responded to a stabbing in Pikesville that turned into an hourslong barricade situation, leaving two adults hospitalized.
