Four fires on the campus of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County since December were set by an on-duty campus police officer, authorities say.
Walter T. Christopher, 36, of Havre de Grace, was indicted on 12 counts in Baltimore County Circuit Court this week and arrested on campus Tuesday morning, the Office of the State Fire Marshal announced. Court records show the fires were set in the campus library in a trash can and box of newspapers, as well as in the chemistry building bathroom, an office, and a bathroom in another building.
A UMBC spokeswoman said the fires were extinguished with no injuries.
Christopher was being held without bond and has a bail review scheduled for Wednesday. No attorney was listed, in court records.

The fire marshal’s office and university declined to discuss how Christopher was linked to the fires, which were set on Dec. 16, Dec. 19 and April 17.
Dinah Winnick, a spokeswoman for UMBC, said Christopher worked for the university for the past two years and has been suspended and moved to non-officer status pending the outcome of the criminal case.
On UMBC’s website, Christopher is described as the vice president of the campus police’s Fraternal Order of Police union. The president of the union, Gary Cumbo Sr., did not return a message seeking comment.
