A 61-year-old man has been arrested and charged with starting several fires across Central Baltimore, the city’s Police Department said in a social media post on Tuesday.
Bernard Stepney of West Baltimore was charged with second-degree arson, first- and second-degree malicious burning, and malicious destruction to property, according to online court records. Stepney did not have a lawyer listed in online records as of Wednesday afternoon.
Police say physical evidence and surveillance video footage tied Stepney to multiple fires: two to mailboxes, in the 300 block of West Mulberry Street and 400 block of Cathedral Street.; and others in the 500 block of West Franklin Street, the 500 block of East Baltimore Street and the 400 block of East Fayette Street. He was arrested on Dec. 3.
There have also been other mailbox fires across the city. WMAR reported last month that a suspect was in custody in relation to a mailbox fire on the corner of Baltimore and South streets.
WBAL reported that firefighters were sent to extinguish several mailbox fires in the 500 block of North Paca Street.
