A fire in a downtown Towson apartment building resulted in multiple rescues and more than a dozen people sent to hospitals on Monday evening, according to the Baltimore County Fire Department.

County firefighters extinguished the three-alarm fire at the Berkshires at Town Center Apartments on East Joppa Road just before 8 p.m.

Firefighters found the fire on the third floor of the multistory apartment building, according to the department’s social media post on X.

Crews still were clearing smoke from the apartment building around 9 p.m.

Thirteen people were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, including smoke inhalation and an ankle injury after slipping on ice, Travis Francis, a spokesperson for the department, said Tuesday.

There were at least a dozen engines and ambulances on scene as of 9 p.m. Monday.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, the department said on X.
