A Silver Spring man died Thursday after an SUV struck him as he rode a bike on the northbound shoulder of New Hampshire Avenue in Cloverly, Montgomery County Police said.

The crash happened at about 2 p.m. in the 15200 block of New Hampshire Avenue in Cloverly, which is in Greater Silver Spring.

First responders were dispatched to the scene on a report of the crash involving a Toyota Rav4 and a bicyclist.

The bicyclist was identified Friday as Robert Sheldon Boethling, 76, of Silver Spring, police said. Boethling was pronounced dead at an area hospital.

The driver of the RAV4 remained on the scene.

The department’s Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating.
