Baltimore City Fire Department crews found one person dead Monday morning from a fire in the city’s Mount Vernon neighborhood that forced multiple people across three apartments to evacuate.

Crews responded to a report of a fire at the 900 block of North Calvert Street at 12:30 a.m. and found the deceased occupant near the origin of the fire, said John Marsh, the fire department spokesman. Their age and gender is unknown, he said.

At the residential dwelling, crews found heavy smoke and fire on the second floor and rear of the building, Marsh said. Firefighters had the fire under control by 1 a.m., he said.

Fire crews evacuated six people from three apartments, and there were no injuries among them. Marsh said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Including Monday’s fire, there have been 15 fatalities from fires across the city in 2024, Marsh said. Last year, there were 19 deaths from fires, according to the State Fire Marshal.

After a fire in Greektown left one woman dead in late November, Baltimore firefighters conducted a “comprehensive safety sweep” around the block where the blaze happened, in which crews offered fire prevention information to 299 homes, inspected 200 smoke alarms and installed 43 of the devices.

Marsh said the fire department generally does a safety sweep 24 hours after a fatality.

As winter sets in, there are several steps people can take to help ensure their homes are safe from fires. Baltimore residents can request free smoke alarms by calling 311, and firefighters will come and install smoke alarms on each level of their homes.
