Power was restored Friday evening at the University of Maryland, College Park, after an hourslong outage shuttered campus libraries and limited dining and health services, officials said.
Crews identified the source of the outage and worked into the evening to restore power in phases.
The Prince George’s County Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department responded to the scene around 1:25 p.m., spokesperson Michael Yourishin said.
The firefighters checked 21 buildings, removed three people from elevators and assisted two people who use wheelchairs down steps, Yourishin said in an email.
Firefighters cleared the scene around 2 p.m., officials said.
The power outage came a day after new and returning students arrived on campus Thursday. Classes start Tuesday, according to the 2025-26 academic calendar.
