A Maryland Transit Administration subway car partially derailed above ground Monday evening, according to Baltimore fire and Maryland transit officials.

Baltimore City Fire Department spokeswoman Blair Adams said fire crews responded to a call at the 5800 block of Wabash Avenue around 6 p.m. Upon arrival, officials observed one car derailed, Adams said.

A Metro Subway operator reported the derailment as the railcar approached the Rogers Avenue station platform, transit spokesman Jerimiah Moerke said. The car remained upright and connected to the other cars, he said.

Five passengers were transported to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, Moerke added. State transit officials are investigating the cause of the incident.

Meanwhile, the MTA Twitter account advised passengers and passersby to avoid the Mondawmin Subway station due to ongoing police activity. Baltimore Police officers responded just after 5 p.m. to a report of a shooting in the underground portion of the station. A 20-year-old man was transported by ambulance to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he was pronounced dead, according to police.

The agency was using buses to transport passengers between the Owings Mills and Penn North stations during the disruption.
