Filming creative videos have become a lost art in today’s music community, but there has been a select few that have caught the eyes of viewers this year. With so many gifted innovators hailing from Maryland, it’s not surprising to see that some of the most imaginative music videos belong to artists from the area. Here’s a list of some of the best music videos from Maryland this year.

“Let It Simmer”— Miss Kam

Shot and edited by Rezt, Baltimore-born artist Miss Kam used her “Let It Simmer” video to show that they can still be fun. Reminiscent of DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince’s “Summertime” video, Kam and a group of her comrades enjoy the hot weather by playing with water guns and dancing. Already showing her hometown pride while rapping over the phenomenal Baltimore club-inspired beats by Torian production, Kam is seen following the tradition of a true Baltimorean in the summertime — eating crabs.

”Wait 4 U (G-Mix)”— NASG Chaz

Watch on YouTube

One of the missing elements in music videos is the actual aspect of telling a story. Dating back for about a decade, a group of friends just standing outside and occasionally rapping the song’s lyrics have become the standard for rap videos. Baltimore artist NASG Chaz remixed Future’s radio smash single “Wait For U” featuring Drake and Tems and cleverly flipped the song’s subject, taunting one of his enemies with a video to match. Directed by Maine Visuals, Chaz patiently waits outside of his enemy’s girlfriend’s house as he lists all of the ways that he arrived at his current location.

“Pound of Shrooms” — 448 Riq featuring OTR Chaz

Watch on YouTube

448 Riq’s “Pound of Shrooms” video doesn’t shy away from the previously mentioned standard of today’s rap videos, but the reason this video stands out is thanks to the visual effects by the director, Jboy. Following through with the song’s theme of being on shrooms, the video serves as a psychedelic visual trip for viewers. With perfectly timed illustrations of grenades and lasers, viewers wouldn’t need subtitles to know what’s being said in the song.

“So Be It” — Alex Vaughn

Watch on YouTube

The Prince George’s County native has been going strong since signing her deal in 2021. She continued to maintain her momentum in 2022 with numerous musical releases and her music video for “So Be It” has been one of the most noteworthy of the year. Directed by Annie Bercy, the music’s visual portrays the talented vocalist and a group of friends enjoying themselves in a car and at a fair. Vaughn, however, is noticeably irritated while attempting to cope with her recent breakup. Cleverly shot to only show her irritation in short instances, the video perfectly grasps the effect a breakup can have on someone.
