February kicks off with a festive spirit, as communities come together to celebrate Black History Month and the Lunar New Year. Other events signal the gradual approach of spring.

Naval Academy band concert

The U.S. Naval Academy Band Chamber Players will perform Thursday evening at the Gordon Center in Owings Mills. The show will feature chamber music by contemporary composers, as well as Mozart, Schumann, Tchaikovsky and Faure. Tickets are free, but registration is required.

National Ice Cream for Breakfast Day
9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday
Did you know the first Saturday in February is National Ice Cream for Breakfast Day? Celebrate at the Prigel Family Creamery in Glen Arm, which will sell ice cream treats like waffle sundaes, donut sundaes and cereal shakes for breakfast, but also lunch and dinner. From 9 a.m. to noon, visitors can walk with cows in the dairy farm’s pasture and enjoy cartoons by the bonfires. No registration is required, and the event is free to attend.
Underground Railroad Walk
10 a.m. to noon Saturday
Emmarts United Methodist Church in Windsor Mill will host a walk along Rolling Road to commemorate the start of Black History Month. The walk ends at the church, a historic safehouse on the Underground Railroad that offered sanctuary to enslaved people seeking freedom. A special program, featuring a keynote address by U.S. Rep. Kweisi Mfume and appearances by Maryland Comptroller Brooke Lierman and other elected officials, will follow.
The event is free, but registration and a $5 donation are requested. For an additional $24.99, visitors can tour the church and its historical artifacts.

BLK Roots and Culture Expo
11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday
Celebrate the first day of Black History Month at the Randallstown Community Center, where visitors can shop Black-owned businesses, attend book readings, learn at health and financial workshops, make arts and crafts and win prizes. A performance lounge featuring live musical, dance and cultural performances will be hosted by Jasmine Kemp, the reigning Ms. Black Maryland USA, and Chekira Hill, the reigning Miss Black Eastern States USA.
The event is free. Registration is preferred but not required.
Lunar New Year celebrations
12:30-4 p.m. Saturday
The Cockeysville branch of the Baltimore County Public Library is hosting events marking the Lunar New Year, a major celebration in many East and Southeast Asian cultures. From 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., children’s author Grace Lin explains Lunar New Year customs and food through her books and leads a draw-along, followed by a book signing. From 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m., the Chinese American Parent Association of the Baltimore Community hosts presentations, cultural performances and craft activities. Both events are free, and no registration is required.

Fitness class with ‘Dancing with the Stars’ pro
10 a.m. to noon Sunday
The Rosenbloom Owings Mills JCC will host LaBlast Fitness, a dance fitness program by “Dancing with the Stars” pro Louis van Amstel. The class, which van Amstel will teach, is based on ballroom dances featured on the hit ABC competition show and combines dance with interval training. It is open to individuals 18 and older.
Registration is required. The cost is $15 for JCC members and $20 for nonmembers who preregister online. Same-day registration is available for $25 for nonmembers and $20 for members.
Towson men’s lacrosse hosts Johns Hopkins
6 p.m. Tuesday

Yes, it’s already lacrosse season. The defending Coastal Athletic Association champion Towson men’s lacrosse team opens its season Tuesday against Johns Hopkins at Johnny Unitas Stadium in Towson. Both teams qualified for last year’s NCAA Tournament and enter the season ranked in the preseason top 20. The Tigers are ranked No. 17, while the nine-time NCAA champion Blue Jays are ranked No. 8. Tickets are $10.
