First Thursday Festival

WTMD’s First Thursday Festival is back, this time with headliner Pigeons Playing Ping Pong. The Baltimore-based jam band has played festivals such as the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival and venues like Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre, and is now returning home for this free concert. Daphne Eckman from Annapolis will open the show, and there will also be local food vendors, artisans, makers and manufacturers for you to check out.

Time: Daphne Eckman goes on at 6:15 p.m.; Pigeons Playing Ping Pong kicks off at 7:30 p.m.

Influential artist Missy Elliott is headlining her first tour in her decades-long career, and will be joined by frequent collaborators Timbaland, Busta Rhymes and Ciara. See the hitmakers perform some of their most popular songs live such as “Work It,” “Touch It” and “Lose Control,” and try to fathom how this is the first time in 30 years that “Supa Dupa Fly” Missy Elliott has had top billing.

Artscape

After last year’s fall dates, Artscape, which bills itself as one of America’s largest free outdoor arts festivals, returns to its proper summer schedule for three days this week. Featured performers include Chaka Khan, Sheila E. and The Original Wailers. The free three-day festival has been going on since 1982 save for a three-year hiatus around the pandemic. A night of nostalgia is good for the soul. All the ‘80s and ‘90s babies can enjoy a night out at this dance party listening to some of their favorite R&B songs. Previous guests at older shows have included Ashanti, Lloyd, Omarion, Mýa, Mario, Tweet and Bobby V, so there’s no telling who else might show up.

5K Run/Walk

Casey Cares Foundation’s 15th Annual 5K Run/Walk will be a morning of exercise and fun to help raise money for families with sick children. Taking place at the Maryland Zoo, those who participate in either the three-mile run or one-mile walk will receive a tech shirt, race bib and finisher medal. For more information, visit the website.

Weber’s Cider Mill Farm is hosting a day of family-friendly fun with their Peach and Blackberry Festival. Sunday, Aug. 4

Subscape

Subscape is a free, three-day music festival with underground artists set to coincide with Artscape. In an effort to uplift local musicians, Subscape will see more than 50 bands perform at Metro Baltimore and the soon-to-be closed The Crown. The lineup on Sunday includes D.O.A., War On Women, Infinite Pizza and more. And while the festival is free to attend, organizers are hoping to raise money in donations to ensure that each band gets paid.

Time: After kicking off Friday night, doors open at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
