The cheese boards are gone, but moderately priced cashmere is on the way.
Japanese clothing brand Uniqlo is opening a new storefront at The Mall in Columbia, taking over space near the entrance to Macy’s that Williams Sonoma recently vacated, according to Lindsay Kahn, a spokeswoman for mall owner Brookfield Properties.
Uniqlo has yet to announce a timeline for opening the Columbia location. Representatives for the global brand and for Williams Sonoma did not return requests for comment Friday.
Williams Sonoma shuttered its Columbia location in January, leaving behind peeling paint above the glass doors that once beckoned Howard County shoppers toward decorative dinnerware, Le Creuset Dutch Ovens and peppermint bark.

This is the second Williams Sonoma store to close in Maryland in recent years. The premium kitchen and housewares retailer pulled out of Towson Town Center in 2017, The Baltimore Sun reported at the time. The brand still operates brick-and-mortar locations at the Cross Keys Village Shops and Annapolis Town Center.
The closure comes at a time when many shoppers are increasingly buying their goods online.
Uniqlo meanwhile has been expanding into new markets in North America. The global retailer announced plans in 2023 to open 20 new storefronts across the continent.
